Statement by Commissioner Stella Kyriakides on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 25 November 2023

"This year's International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women finds us at an alarming juncture where women, in addition to being frequent victims of domestic violence, are unfortunately also the first victims of war and terrorism. The rights of women and girls are threatened, curtailed or abolished completely in many parts of the world — resulting in reversal of significant progress made in recent decades.

The EU will continue to work tirelessly to eliminate violence against women. We support women's rights around the world and civil society actions to achieve gender equality, but also to improve women's access to health."
