Famagusta Sewerage Network successfully completed with the financial support of the European Union

The European Commission is pleased to announce the successful completion of the Famagusta Sewerage Network.

The European Commission is pleased to announce the successful completion of the Famagusta Sewerage Network. The project with a value of more than EUR 20 million was concluded as planned, with a formal closing ceremony held on 24 January 2024. The key objective of the project was to solve Famagusta's long-standing wastewater problem and make a positive contribution to public health and the environment. The resulting sewerage network will serve 2 230 house connections, benefitting nearly 50 000 people.

At the opening of the event, Judit Rózsa the Director of the Structural Reform Support Directorate for Coordination, Resources and Aid Programme of the European Commission said: “It has been a long journey to get here, but I believe it has been well worth it. This project, which has completely renewed and extended the sewerage network, is the largest EU project funded under the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community to date. The result is a sewerage system that meets all European standards”.

Approximately 140 workers, engineers, and inspectors participated in the efforts to construct the 45 km of sewer pipes, house connections, pump stations, and asphalt paving within the framework of the project. It involved upgrading the existing sewerage network and building a new network in parallel to the existing one. Following the successful installation and testing of the new system, the old network was decommissioned.
