Commission publishes a roadmap for the New European Bauhaus Facility to make neighbourhoods across Europe more sustainable, beautiful and inclusive

Visit of Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, to Germany

Today, the Commission published its roadmap for implementing the New European Bauhaus Facility. It is an important step to make our living spaces more sustainable, inclusive, and beautiful for everyone – the core values of the New European Bauhaus (NEB).

Since its launch in 2021, the NEB has created a vibrant community with over 1,700 organisations and invested more than €500 million in tangible projects that improve life of our citizens in their neighbourhoods. For instance, the NEB Prizes showcase the diversity of projects supported by the NEB – from blue community gardens in the city centre of Gothenburg to reviving of riverbanks and the celebration of urban water resources in Sofia and Lisbon.

Running from 2025 to 2027, the NEB Facility is the first-ever multiannual financial tool for the New European Bauhaus. With a total budget of €360 million for research and innovation from Horizon Europe and at least a similar level of investment from other EU programmes, plus national and private funding, this pioneering financing instrument revitalises and transforms neighbourhoods. It promotes innovative solutions and access to affordable housing. It supports innovation towards a sustainable, circular, and regenerative construction ecosystem. And it enables change through research and innovation to foster social cohesion and well-being. The roadmap will provide guidance by outlining how the Commission, in close collaboration with Member States and NEB stakeholders, will implement the NEB Facility. It details the budget, governance, and key measures.

The Commission also published today the analysis of the 2024 NEB Facility public consultation. With over 300 respondents across Europe, the consultation helped identify specific needs and most cutting-edge ideas required for comprehensive and inclusive transformation of neighbourhoods. The consultation has showed that the NEB Facility is on the right track, with its goals aligning with the needs from actors on the ground.

Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy, Jessika Roswall, said: “The launch of the NEB Facility Roadmap offers a first glimpse of the budget, governance, and the implementation of the NEB Facility 2025-2027, the first-ever multiannual financial tool for the New European Bauhaus. Working closely with Member States and the expanding family of NEB stakeholders, we are ready to bring positive transformation, sustainability and circularity to neighbourhoods across Europe and beyond!
