EU Vaccines Strategy: Commissioner Kyriakides visits Austria and meets with Minister of Health

Tomorrow, 1 October, Commissioner Kyriakides will be in Vienna, Austria, where she will meet with Minister of Health, Social Affairs and Consumer Protection, Wolfgang Mückstein.

Press conference by Mariya Gabriel, Stella Kyriakides, and Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioners, on the launch of EU missions to tackle major challenges

Discussions will focus on the EU Vaccines Strategy and the roll-out of the national vaccination campaign in Austria, as well as the way forward on the proposals under the European Health Union. The meeting will be followed by a visit to a vaccination centre by the Commissioner together with the Minister of Health and the Mayor of Vienna, and will finish with a joint press point at 10h15. The Commissioner will then visit St. Anna Children's Cancer Research Institute.

Ahead of the visit, Stella Kyriakides, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, said: “The EU delivered on its commitment to have 70% of the EU's adult population vaccinated. The outcome of the EU Vaccines Strategy is good, but more work needs to be done to further increase the uptake of vaccination in Austria. We are working as closely as possible with Austria and all our Member States to make sure vaccinations continue to rise. The message is clear: vaccination is and will be our strongest weapon against variants and an exit from the pandemic. I am looking forward to discussing how the EU can further support the roll-out of the Austrian national vaccination campaign.” Today's actions are part of the Commission's on-going efforts and Commissioner Kyriakides' commitment to support the roll-out of Member States national COVID-19 vaccination campaigns.
