As part of his ‘Tour d'Europe' to consult the Europeans on the EU's long-term budget, Commissioner Serafin will be traveling to Cyprus today. This stop marks the first visit since the Commission presented its MFF proposal in July and highlights Cyprus's strategic role in the upcoming negotiations, particularly as its Council Presidency in the first half of next year will coincide with a crucial phase of the MFF discussions. During this segment of the tour, the Commissioner will engage with various public and private authorities, beneficiaries of EU funding, to facilitate comprehensive political consultations across Europe, demonstrating the European Commission's commitment to continued collaboration with Member States.
On Thursday, Commissioner Serafin will be in Nicosia to meet the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and Makis Keravnos, Minister of Finance. These meetings will be an opportunity to exchange views on the next MFF proposal, also having in mind the upcoming Council of the EU Presidency of Cyprus.
Three consequent meetings will take place to continue exchanging views on the next MFF proposal and the role of Cyprus in it, including with Annita Demetriou, President of the House of Parliament of Cyprus; with representatives of the Parliamentary Committee for Financial and Budgetary Affairs of the House of Parliament; and lastly, with Marilena Raouna, Deputy Minister for European Affairs. Commission Serafin will conclude his first day meeting with Charalambos Prountzos, Nicosia's Mayor.
On Friday, and to finalise, the Commissioner will be visiting the University of Cyprus, where he will have the chance to see how EU funding translates into real opportunities for citizens and communities in the photovoltaic farm of the University, as well as the research laboratories and the library.
