Commission and EU Agencies agree on a joint action plan with Cyprus to improve migration management

Today, Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson  and Minister of the Interior Nicos Nouris for the Cypriot authorities signed a Memorandum of Understanding and detailed Action Plan to support and strengthen migration management in Cyprus.

Visit of Margaritis Schinas, Vice-President of the European Commission, to Cyprus

The Memorandum was signed in the presence of Vice-President for Promoting our European Way of Life, Margaritis Schinas, and President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades. The implementation of the action plan will be supported by the EU's Home affairs Agencies: European Union Agency for Asylum, Frontex and Europol. Modelled on the experience of the joint pilot for Lesvos, the Commission and the EU agencies agreed to continue and further step up, where necessary, the EU's financial and operational support to help Cyprus establish a fair and effective migration management system, in line with EU law. The specific objectives include: enhancing first reception capacities, improving the level of material reception conditions for asylum applicants, supporting timely and effective asylum and return procedures and establishing and implementing an integration strategy.
