Over two years after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, European countries are now at a key juncture. Health services have changed rapidly and dramatically to respond to the health emergency, and many countries have now turned attention to recovery while continuing to register a significant number of COVID-19 cases.
As part of the ‘State of Health in the EU’ (SoHEU) - a two-year recurring project that the European Commission has carried out in partnership with the OECD and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies since 2016 – this webinar will present a data-based account of the state of the health system in Cyprus from a comparative, EU-wide perspective.

The State of Health in the EU aims at making health system information, expertise and best practices easily accessible to policymakers and everyone who helps to shape health policies.
It is managed by the European Commission and benefits from the work of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and of the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies (Observatory)Search for available translations of the preceding, in its on-going effort to support knowledge sharing across the EU.
The State of Health in the EU gathers the latest evidence on health and captures it in a series of concise, digestible reports.
The recurring State of Health in the EU cycle consists of four main stages:
- The joint OECD-Commission report Health at a Glance: EuropeSearch for available translations of the preceding provides a horizontal, cross-country assessment of national health systems’ performance in the EU. It also includes 2 thematic chapters on important topics.
- Individual Country Health ProfilesSearch for available translations of the preceding, adapted to the context and specificities of each EU country, assess the strengths and challenges in their respective health systems.
- A Companion ReportSearch for available translations of the preceding link, published alongside the Country Health Profiles, showcases some of the most significant trends in the transformation of health systems in the EU.
- Health authorities in EU countries can request voluntary exchangesSearch for available translations of the preceding with the experts involved in the State of Health in the EU, to discuss findings and potential policy responses.
The State of Health in the EU supports Member States by strengthening the evidence base on health. It provides the Commission with data and policy analysis to support EU level policy development and cooperation.
Based on the key findings from Cyprus’ Country Health Profile 2021 and the European Commission’s Companion Report, presenters and panelists will discuss:
1. To what extent did the COVID-19 pandemic impact the pace of recent health system reforms in Cyprus, notably the operational roll-out of the new national health system “GeSY”?
2. Which government policies and investments should be prioritized in coming years for the Cypriot health system?
