REPowering Cyprus: Ensuring energy affordability, security of supply and sustainability

The new geopolitical and energy market reality requires us to accelerate drastically the clean energy transition and increase Europe's energy independence from unreliable suppliers and volatile fossil fuels.

In this context phasing out our dependence on fossil fuels from Russia is key. To do so, the Commission proposes to develop a REPowerEU plan that will increase the resilience of the EU-wide energy system based on two pillars: 1) Diversifying gas supplies, via higher Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and pipelineimports from non-Russian suppliers, and larger volumes of biomethane and renewable hydrogen production and imports; and, 2) reducing faster the use of fossil fuels in our homes, buildings, industry, and power system, by boosting energy efficiency, increasing renewables and electrification, and addressing infrastructure bottlenecks.

The online event is a great opportunity for EC policy makers and relevant stakeholders from the public and private energy sector to discuss REPowering Cyprus to ensure energy affordability, security of supply and sustainability. Its main objective is to steer an open and constructive dialogue among participants in order to get feedback on the adopted and upcoming legislative initiatives, but also to address considerations of the stakeholders.

The session will start with three speakers from the European Commission: Melina Boneva, member of the Recovery and Resilience Task Force, will present an overview of the REPowerEU plan; Ignacio Asenjo, policy officer for renewable energy will speak about accelerating the renewable energy deployment and the new energy solar strategy; Feodora Petit, team leader for energy gas markets will present the role of gas in the REPowerEU plan agenda.

Three panellists from the academic, professional and non-governmental sectors Dr Venizelos Efthymiou, Chairman of the FOSS Research Centre for Sustainable Energy of the University of Cyprus; Dinos Nicolaides, Chair of the Energy Policy Committee of the Scientific and Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK), and Charis Kordatos, Head of the Climate Change & Environment Department at the Cyprus Energy Agency will initiate the discussion with brief interventions.

Theodoros Zachariadis, Professor at the Energy, Environment and Water Research Centre of the Cyprus Institute, will then moderate a dialogue with the speakers, the panellists and the stakeholders, on the challenges and the opportunities of the REPowerEU plan for Cyprus.
