Description

About the European Day of Languages
The European Day of Languages on 26 September is a well-established, annual opportunity to raise awareness around language learning and linguistic diversity. It started in 2001, organised jointly by the European Union and the Council of Europe and this year marks its 20th anniversary. Many language and cultural institutes, associations, universities and, in particular schools, take part. With funding from Erasmus+, the European Union helps fund local and national events around the European Day of Languages.
The aim is to encourage the learning of foreign languages as well as to highlight their beauty and the ways in which they can have a positive impact on European citizens’ lives, education and professional careers.
The harmonious co-existence of many languages in Europe is a strong symbol of the EU’s aspiration to be united in diversity, which is one of the cornerstones of the European project.
For 2021, events organized across Europe include a travelling Peter Pan book exhibition in Austria, micro-lessons of 40 languages in the centre of Prague, an online memory game in Finland, literary translation workshops in Hungary, a Spelling Bee in Malta, multi-lingual story telling in Greece and much more.
